Der Ring
By Frank Nimsgern and Daniel Call
World Premiere: 2007 at Theater Bonn
Synopsis
An ancient myth, retold: The gods give gold to humankind in order to test them, thereby planting greed in their hearts. In the face of wars arising from envy and hatred, the gods reclaim the treasure and sink it into the depths of the Rhine, guarded by the heavenly daughters.
Now, the three ladies—called Tenderness, Desire, and Pain—are not exactly renowned for their vigilance, and after 1,000 years at the bottom of the river, they allow the Rhinegold, and with it the legendary Ring of Power, to be stolen by a dwarf named Alberich. He uses it to establish a reign of terror in Nibelheim, which in turn summons Wotan, the father of the gods, who needs the gold and the ring to pay the giants who have just completed his residence, Valhalla.
Through cunning, Wotan takes the ring from the dwarf, a ring that transforms the giant who wears it into a fratricide and a dragon. Meanwhile, in his spectral forge, Alberich creates a superior human made of iron and steel: Siegfried. Siegfried wrests the ring from the dragon’s claws, but he too falls under its spell. After rescuing the banished goddess Brünnhilde from the flames and overthrowing Wotan in single combat, he rises to become the sole ruler of humankind. Will he succumb to the whispers of Alberich, his father, and become a dictator himself? Or will the power of love prevail?
Bold yet not irreverent, composer Nimsgern and librettist Call draw on the myth of the Ring of the Nibelung. They joyfully juggle elements from the Edda, the Nibelungenlied, Wagner’s Ring, Hebbel’s dramas, Grimm’s fairy tales, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The result is a vivid and compelling fairy tale that reinterprets an ancient myth in an engaging and often humorous way; a lively homage to its predecessors, a musical bow to Wagner and Tolkien and to all the great minds who have freely drawn inspiration from this rich world of legend. And, last but not least, an entertaining and colorful work that also draws parallels to current political events and structures.

Press Reviews
“His musical, also referred to as a ‘Symphonic Rock Musical,’ need not hide behind the great name of Richard Wagner—quite the contrary: his Ring is just as forceful and penetrating as Wagner’s, and that in ‘only’ 2 hours and 25 minutes. The stage of Theater Hof trembled under the weight of the mighty saga, matched by a cast of considerable star potential.”
“Hof – Theater Hof can claim a major premiere success with the musical Der Ring by Frank Nimsgern: Hardly had the final note faded on Saturday when the audience in the sold-out house could no longer remain in their seats […] Nimsgern’s version of the great myths that Richard Wagner used as the foundation for his operatic tetralogy can, in this form as a symphonic rock musical with both hard-hitting and lyrical moments, be brought effortlessly to a modern, young audience.”
