QI
A Palace Fantasy
World Premiere 2008: Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin
Synopsis
Welcome to the world of Qi. Enter the gate of imagination with the Friedrichstadt-Palast and encounter the unique universe of Qi. Qi—the force and energy, temperament and emotion rooted in Asian philosophy—erupts before the audience in a spectacle of superlatives.
Superlatives define the production: the world’s largest mobile ice surface, the largest flying trapeze act in the world, the longest line of showgirls in the world. The stage of the Friedrichstadt-Palast, the largest theater stage in the world, is just large enough to contain it. In “Qi – A Palace Fantasy,” the extraordinary becomes reality; dreamlike visual worlds transform into revue spectacle. Only grand revue—the large-scale show format—can fuse supreme acrobatic achievement and artistic mastery into a cohesive whole.
It is a crucible in which artistic disciplines converge and transform into a glamorous world of color and music, movement and attraction. “Qi – A Palace Fantasy” surpasses previous productions with exceptional performances in water and on land, in the air and on ice. A virtuosic immersion into cascades of color that captivates, magical moments that astonish, and emotions that remain unforgettable.

FAQ about the Production
Here you will find the most frequently asked questions and answers about QI – clearly summarized for quick reference.
The concept of energy is conveyed both dramaturgically and musically. The characters exist in states of imbalance that are reflected in conflicts, relationships, and decisions. Music and movement are used deliberately to make inner tensions, blockages, and processes of development both audible and visible. The musical employs strong imagery and emotional contrasts to give these themes tangible form.
The title “QI” refers to the concept of life energy from Eastern philosophy. This idea serves as a metaphorical point of departure for the musical. Frank Nimsgern approaches the concept not in an esoteric sense, but symbolically, transferring it to modern realities in which individuals find themselves caught between performance pressure, self-doubt, and the desire for inner clarity.
“QI” is a musical about energy, awareness, and the search for inner balance. At its center are individuals standing at turning points in their lives, confronted with questions of meaning, identity, and personal direction.
The narrative intertwines external events with inner processes of development, telling a story of transformation, insight, and the power to consciously shape one’s own life.
For “QI,” Frank Nimsgern develops a modern, cross-genre soundscape. Electronic elements, rock, pop, and orchestral passages merge into a musical dramaturgy that reflects inner states and intensively accompanies the characters’ process of transformation. The music is conceived less as narrative and more as a means of emotional condensation.
“QI” addresses key questions of our time: how to deal with stress, the search for meaning, and the balance between external demands and inner needs. The musical speaks to individuals engaged with personal development, change, and self-responsibility, thereby establishing a direct connection to contemporary life.
